Community College Leadership: Ed.D or Ph.D at Oregon State University

The Community College Leadership Program at Oregon State University (OSU) has made a number of recent changes to the program to make it more accessible to working professionals and to Washington State residents.  Specific changes include

  • Reducing travel
  • Increasing proximity to Washington State and Portland airports
  • Changing structure to help students pass their oral examination earlier and proceed with their dissertation earlier

OSU offers a Doctorate in Education with an emphasis in Community College Leadership.  This program is offered in a cohort model format using a combination of an off-campus conference center and hybrid courses that only require students to be in attendance during two intensive weekends each term during fall, winter, and spring quarters.  There is also a one week summer requirement in Corvallis in year one and year two.

The class meetings occur in Wilsonville, which is located on the southern end of the Portland metropolitan area. During these weekends students spend their time together establishing friendships, partnerships, and collegial connections that can last a lifetime.  The camaraderie of the cohort model establishes collaborative and cooperative learning which encourages diversified thinking. The online portion encourages independent responsibility and assessment.

In addition to a number of Oregonians, there are students in the program who reside in Washington and carpool or reside in California and fly to Portland International Airport and car pool to Wilsonville. The faculty includes professionals who have had experience in Oregon, Washington, and/or California.  Additionally, there have been students from Alaska, Hawaii, Arizona, Idaho, and Colorado.

Applications for the 2014-2015 cohort for priority consideration are due February 15st.  Review of applications and in person interviews are conducted during February and March. Applications after the early deadline are considered on a space available basis.
